Joel Patry was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada in 1988. He studied at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design in Vancouver, British Columbia (BA, Major in Painting and Film History). His work revolves around aspects of human relationships to one another, their surroundings and self-reflection. The works create landscapes that may involve urban or natural attributes, yet strive to include a new perspective, which cannot always be perceived as a natural occurrence that would be in the real world.
Patry’s captivating abstract paintings utilize vibrant colours and bold textures to create speculative and imaginative landscapes. The work possesses a punchy playful energy, created through meticulous line work, masterful colour gradation, and layers of recognizable motifs. Patry blurs and distorts images of trucks, machines, people, and animals, experimenting with scale and proportion, to explore the balance between nature, memory, and relationships. According to the artist, “the work can be youthful, vital, intriguing while also displaying moments of chaos, confusion, and instability. This is me accepting how life is. That there is no way to have one side without the other.”
Patry has exhibited extensively in Vancouver and Calgary with his work residing in private collections across Canada and the United States. In 2010, he received the Vancouver General Hospital and University of British Columbia Hospital Foundation Idea Art Award, an award given to an artist whose work connects visual arts to the health care sector, promoting healing and humanizing clinical spaces.
